Just four weeks after the release of Internet Explorer 9, Dean Hachamovitch today announced the first platform preview of Internet Explorer 10 at MIX 2011.
Today, the best experiences are native experiences; but the most important experiences continue to be the web sites we go to day in and out. The browser is only as good as what it enables developers around the world to build with it. Taking full advantage of modern hardware and a modern operating system is what is required for websites to start looking and feeling like native applications.
IE9 and Windows 7 offers developers the ability to create web experiences with HTML5 that have the same performance and immersive experience that they have come to expect from a native application. In his keynote address Dean demonstrated a perfect example of a website that simply wasn’t possible a year ago. SparkArt built an incredible HTML5 experience that turns Bon Jovi fans into directors of a Bon Jovi video. They did this in just 1.5 weeks. Take a look:
The only native experience of the web today is on Windows 7 with IE. As you can see from the keynote video, or by doing your own comparisons, there is a real cost in terms of performance when browsers rely on abstraction layers when it comes to hardware and OS. IE9 has been fully re-architected to tap directly into the capabilities of Windows 7 and the underlying device. The outcome is not only incredibly fast sites, but developers are able to build experiences on the web that simply weren’t possible a year ago.
