XBMC lands on iPad, iPhone and Apple TV 2

Popular media player is a real jailbreak tempter

One of the most common complaints that we hear about the new Apple TV is that there is no XBMC option on board.

Well, now there is as the XBMC team has announced that the open-source media platform has been ported to the new iOS based Apple TV, as well as the iPhone 4 and iPad too.

"These are not initial ports, and they are not early development snapshots", states the team. "Here they are: full XBMC installs and source code, ready for consumption".

The XBMC software, which can already be used on the older Mac OS X-based, Intel x86 Apple TV, has now been updated to work on the ARM Architecture A4 chips used in the sequel, so you can now play content formats Apple doesn't natively support on its "hobby" box. This also means 1080p playback too.

The iPad version is also described as "fully blown" and you can drag and drop media from your computer, or share it on your home-network.

The iPhone 4 version is described by its makers as "frustrating" they simply made it available "because we can". Ooh cocky.

As you've probably guessed XBMC won't be landing in the App Store, you'll need to jailbreak to get it on your iDevice. Tempting though isn't it?
