Google has gone to the extreme to show off just how effective its Chrome OS, cloud-based, platform can be.

Although it's unlikely that your laptop is going to self combust, freeze or get spiked like Alan Partridge's foot, there is always a chance that you might drop it, or spill your coffee all over it.

And, if that does happen, Chrome OS means that you will not have lost your work - because everything is backed up in the cloud and you'll have access to your digital life whenever and wherever you log-in.

The 5-minute video also gives us a nice glimpse of the new platform in action, with Google Chrome UX designer Glen Murphy showing off some of the everyday tasks that the OS is capable of.

Google recently detailed the unbranded Cr-48 which will be the first Google Chrome OS device, although it will only be available to a select few on a pilot scheme.

The platform is expected to get a mainstream release, with manufacturers reportedly readying their machines, in early 2011.
