Microsoft Web Application Configuration Analyzer v2.0

Web Application Configuration Analyzer (WACA) analyzes server configuration for security best practices related to General Windows, IIS , ASP.NET and SQL Server settings.

Web Application Configuration Analyzer (WACA) is a tool that scans a server against a set of best practices recommended for pre-production and production servers. It can be used by developers to ensure that their codebase works within a secure / hardened environment (although many of the checks are not as applicable for developers). The list of best practices is derived from the Microsoft Information Security & Risk Management Deployment Review Standards used internally at Microsoft to harden production and pre-production environments for line of business applications. The Deployment Review standards themselves were derived from content released by Microsoft Patterns & Practices, in particular: Improving Web Application Security: Threats and Countermeasures available at: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms994921.aspx. It uses an agent-less scan that requires the user to have admin privileges on the target server, as well as any SQL Server instances running on that machine.
This release of WACA we included some new features. They include:

  • Suppressions ? you can now suppress any rule you feel is not appropriate for your scan.
  • Saving of suppression files ? once you set up a suppression list you want to use you can save it off for future uses.
  • You can change the suppressions and regenerate the report without needing to re-run the scan.
  • Reporting ? Updated the reporting section to include suppression information so you know what passed, failed, was not applicable and what was suppressed.
  • Multiple reports ? you can view multiple scans of the same machine or view a single machine?s scan and compare it to other machines.
  • Export to the Microsoft RED format.
  • Scan multiple systems and SQL instances in one bulk scan.
  • Additional rules ? we?ve added in additional SQL rules.
  • And of course bug fixes that were missed in the last release.

@Shaq Announces Retirement On Twitter Using Video Sharing Tool Tout

Maybe I'm just obsessed with pop culture and technology, but it's still fascinating to see how celebrities use Twitter. Some use the platform to vent, others for raising money, and some use it as a launching pad for political campaigns. It's a fact that celebs have actually helped the network grow into a mainstream social tool. Either way, Twitter has become a go-to communications and news platform for most celebs and political figures. And today, NBA basketball star Shaquille O'Neill (@Shaq) used Twitter to announce his retirement after 19 seasons, and four NBA titles.

Twitter and Google hand over data: We're all newspapers now

We break down the stories circulating the web
Twitter and Google hand over data: We're all newspapers now. Google, Twitter, Data, Social networks, Email, Online 0

The great data handover has begun it seems, with both Twitter and Google now set to release details of users to the authorities. This follows various internet-based media fiascos, suggesting no-one online can hide behind?anonymity?any longer.

The rules that newspapers have been subjected to for over a century are now likely to be ever more prevalent to the general Twitter user in the coming months, as the battle to find out who tweets what or who emails who becomes ever more important. ??

First came the footballer-who-shall-not-be-named episode, which has resulted in an attempt made to force Twitter to release details of the injunction breaking user. Next was South Tyneside council acquiring Twitter data connected to someone who had published potentially libellous statements on a blog. This crucial case could help support that of the other footballer's.?If that wasn't enough, Google now seems to have gotten involved, facing a court order that will require it to hand over emails deleted by Gordon Ramsay's father in law Chris Hutchinson.

Given the complexities of all the cases and the implications carried for the day to day internet user, we thought it best if we break things down for you.

The speed at which information?dissipates across the Internet is so drastically different to that which our legal system is used to controlling, that much of it has been forced to play catch up. Enforcing a superinjunction on something like a newspaper is relatively easy as those who break it can be directly traced. Twitter, however, allows increased levels of anonymity, faster spread of potentially injunction-breaking info and more people to?inadvertently?break them.?

With the anonymous footballer case, things are relatively straightforward. Someone has identified them via Twitter, breaking the superinjunction and subsequently courts and lawyers (as well as the media) have rushed to find out his identity.

In breaking the injunction he or she is liable for contempt of court and as such could face a hefty fine or worse. The reason the case is so important is because until now Twitter has remained tight lipped about users' identities. Committing contempt of court is so easy to do in 140 characters that it poses a real threat to those of us who join in with the daily retweeting or posting of interesting information, the entire point of Twitter itself.

Next comes the, perhaps, far more crucial case involving South Tyneside authorities. Officials and councillors went all the way to California to try and obtain the identity of a person who libelled them in a blog called "Mr Monkey". Libel, unlike slander, is normally committed by newspapers where it exists in a more permanent form. But the emergence of increasing numbers of libel cases involving Twitter, like that of Courtney Love who had to pay $430,000 for a tweet, place many of us under threat.

Freedom of speech is the central theme here and whether or not cases like this involving Twitter are restricting it. Also important is the affect that the South Tyneside case may have on that of the footballer's case, as it is the first time Twitter has given in to legal pressure from court action brought by a British group.

Keen not to be exempt from the data freedom farce, Gordon Ramsay has now got Google involved, demanding that emails deleted by his father in law, Chris Hutchinson, be handed over.

A superinjunction lifted earlier this week revealed reasons for Hutchinson's sacking. The emails in question were conversations between Ramsay and his solicitor and were said to be deleted after Ramsay's email account was hacked (more likely the password obtained). Unlike the Twitter case this is much more straightforward, with those in question easier to identify and no superinjunction involved. That said, if Google does follow the court order obtained by Ramsay and information is handed over, that will be yet another case which sees information revealed by an internet giant.?

For some this is reassuring, after all the anonymity available with the Internet can pose legitimate threats and opportunities for many to act unpleasantly or even illegally and without punishment.

Many of us engage daily with social media, taking advantage of all the communication and interaction the Internet offers.

This increasing trend towards data being released to authorities could place restrictions on those who use the Internet for legitimate reasons. Gone are the days when Twitter was a platform for sharing opinions and enjoying others' statements, from now on we are going to?have to be careful and considered, just like the mainstream media has for years, when we tweet.

Windows Phone helps parents work smarter

Due to either my role on the marketing team or my brief stint as a wannabe mommy blogger, Brian and Michael invited me to post occasionally. (Ok, so probably only 10 people ever read my blog, they were all related to me, and neither of them were Brian or Michael. But I do work full-time at Microsoft and have two toddlers at home). And recently we?ve seen a lot of interest in our phone from women ? especially moms. Not just because the Windows Phone UI looks kind of ?pretty? (although we do get that a lot), but because the phone can help you save time and stay organized?a top priority for busy moms, dads, or anybody trying to balance multiple priorities.

Just this weekend, People.com posted an article Windows Phone 7: A Smart Cell Phone for Busy Parents and we recently hooked up with Harris Interactive on a survey to see just how far people would go to reclaim a few precious minutes.

We found that 90% of moms say they would be happier if they could get just ten minutes back each day. And most would give up sex, alcohol, TV or chocolate to get that extra time. Combine that with the fact that 70% of moms say that keeping track of schedules and to do lists is one of their biggest time hits and coming up with smarter ways to use a smartphone starts to make a lot of sense.

So with that in mind here are some ways I use my phone to keep myself a little more sane:

  • Digital Post-its: At work I love Post Its. I am constantly sticking them on my desk or my monitor as reminders of what I have to do that day. I use my start screen the same way by pinning things there as reminders ? my integrated calendar (Outlook for work and Windows Live for family stuff), which links directly to Bing so I can easily get directions to where I need to go, my playlist for the gym (as motivation to actually GO to the gym), a OneNote list for tracking the grocery list, or my friend (who I have been meaning to call).
  • Built-in Search: The built-in search button gets me to Bing in one click so I can quickly find what I need on the Web ? whether it?s helping me quickly find a Starbucks or place to eat in a new city or neighborhood or to find critical information quickly (like who got kicked off American Idol).
  • Office for when you?re not in the office: I?ve learned that when someone promises to send a document by ?end of day? that means something different to everyone. The Office Hub lets me not only easily view documents on my phone, but also edit them so I don?t have to wait by a computer when I know I need to review something.
  • A better friend in 5 minutes a day: The fact that my Facebook feed is built-in to the People Hub helps me stay connected. Whenever I have a few minutes I can keep up with what?s going on with my friends or post a happy birthday to someone?s wall without having to open an app (which keeps me from being ?that? friend that forgot someone?s birthday?again).
  • [Insert your favorite apps here]: In addition to all the built-in features that help save me time, there are over 18,000 apps to do everything from quickly compare prices with ShopSavvy (lots of stores will honor competitors prices if you can show the same product advertised for less), get recipes (Big Oven lets you put in 3 ingredients you have and get ideas for what you can make) or entertain grumpy toddlers (my kids love Animal Sounds app). Check out Michael?s occasional Pinworthy column to keep up on the latest from Marketplace.
